The purpose of this BLOG is to have one place where boat builders can go to find out what is happening in the world of boat building, especially events that affect your business. Good boat building practice is also a vital part of boating safety. Safe boating starts with a safe boat. SAFE BOATING IS FOR LIFE.

Boat building related comments are more than welcome. Please do not post ads or links to commercial web sites on this blog. Any comments not related to the blog or to boat building will be deleted.

I do not write these reports and have no control over their content. I am what is called an aggregator. I simply collect the reports and post them in one place. If you think a story is not correct you need to contact the news service that created it.

Maine is one of the few places where wooden boats are considered a cool thing. I’ve always loved them so now that I need a boat I decided to build it. Not only am I crazy enough to take on this task, I’ve decided to design it as well. Why would anyone want to risk all that time and effort on a design when there are so many professional ones to choose from? Just crazy I guess.

My virtual boat

I want a simple, light, tough, easily driven eighteen foot boat for recreational lobstering (5 traps). I want to use it for excursions to Bar Harbor (8 miles away) and I want it to be electric. Think of it as a Nissan Leaf in the water. It will be driven by a six battery 36 volt power supply and a state-of-the-art permanent rare-earth magnet motor capable of around 4 hp. This will have a gas engine equivalent of about 8 horsepower, so I’ve read. The full-blown fantasy includes a roof covered with solar cells capable of generating 400 watts in full sun but we’ll see how that goes.

The hull will resemble a mastless sailboat more than a runabout because it will be a displacement rather than a planing design. That means that the hull will not lift out of the water, the transom will be higher and the boat will have a maximum speed of around 6 miles per hour. I’m going to built it out of marine plywood, and the deep cycle batteries will be housed in a hollow keel; nice and low for stability.

How the heck do you design a boat? Actually, it’s easier than ever with free software available from Carlson Design Corp of Tulsa OK. The program is called Chine Hull Designer and it is made for plywood constructed boats. The software computes the waterline at a given load, stability, a table of offsets and plywood patterns just in case you have access to a zillion dollar plotter/cutter machine.

Imagine cruising silently without fumes, starting with the flip of a switch and recharging for pennies. Electric boat propulsion is growing fast. There are limitations of course, but with weight and speed less of an issue than with autos, it seems like a good fit. The Yahoo electricboats group has over 4000 members, and there are numerous sites on the web where you can learn more. I may be crazy but I’m leaving the virtual phase. The plywood will be delivered in a few days.

Many of us have had a dream of boating across the world or across the lake one day. If you still have the urge and really wish to work on constructing plywood boats or building your own kayak, canoe, rowing boat, sailboat, or powerboat could be a start.

The program of boat building and design will lead you in every step gaining your confidence in the outcome. It will walk you through in the most efficient way from the first step of having the idea to finding the right set of plans.

If you have your own idea for a specific boat plan you wish to build, then it is much easier to start with building it right away. For boat building and design process of you only have to have the interest in boating and hand working. Really there is no need for former experience with constructing plywood boats or exceptional knowledge with mathematics or physics. Of course there you will need to make few simple calculations and develop an aesthetic eye. However, with the plans and the instruction attached you will get to learn the main principles of boat building and understand the entire process.

Designing and building your own boat or constructing plywood boats is much more art than science. Technology and modern automation will never take the place of your eye and the judgment of the builder.

After you have the decision of the boat plans you wish to build, and you have the list of materials, then you will learn how to start building your own boat using some basic building skills. No one is going to build his boat with only a complete set of plans under their arm, but depending on the time and efforts. It should be possible to get the work done.

The main goal of the program is helping you build the boat of your dreams by giving you the basic knowledge and maximum support. However, if you will still have a burning desire to start constructing plywood boats once again then I will consider it as great success.</div>
